Top 5 decaf coffee Places in Canggu, Bali
Okay, so let’s us back up here a little. I used to be a heavy coffee drinker. And I don’t mean like the usual 3 to 4 cups per day kinda gal but more of the I would have gone for a coffee IV had I thought it was practical (it isn't).
The story as to why I eventually had to stop coffee completely, then reintroduce it to then make the conscious decision to have decaf is for another time (unless you’re impatient, then grab a coffee and ask in the comments).
I am not going to argue that decaf and caffeinated coffee taste the same. They don’t. I did realize however, that for me, having coffee was more about the taste of coffee itself and never the energy boost as I am already almost always, pretty fire-y — for the most part.
Coffee gives my senses joy and so I chose to keep that without the full on caffeine.
How I like my — decaf — coffee just so that you know:
· Mostly iced unless it I have it early in the morning
· I orded long black lattes but get the milk on the side (I don’t like fresh milk and usually opt for amond milk). I do taste the coffee first before adding the milk in
· I don’t use any sugars at all or sweetners. The only exception is when the in-house made almond milk is already sweetened with dates. Most people like sweet coffee but the good thing here, is I am actually tasting the blend itself to let you know
· I like coffee to be embodied and not too watery. You’d be shocked how many roasters actually have that.
Alright, so let’s get to it.
1. BGS
Hands down the best coffee I have had in Bali. Before you head there, hear me out — if you have never had BGS coffee before, it is good to know that it doesn’t taste like most coffees so it can be an acquired taste BUT it could, eventually, despite its price tag, become an addiction…mainly because no other coffees taste like it. At BGS, you MUST choose the almond milk because it is their signature. Otherwise, it’s just another coffee ( I am exaggerating but you have got to add the almond milk). It is made in-house and naturally sweetened but absolutely amazing. I don’t know if it would still be my no. 1 coffee had it not been for the almond milk — and the skilled fun baristas. If you’re looking for a cheap find in Bali, this isn’t it. Their craft coffee has a crafted pricetag…but worth it. They also have a pretty upbeat atmosphere, neighborhood-like setup where the cool kids hang out. Other BGS branches can be more laid back but those aren’t in Canggu.
I love that their takeaway cups are environmentally friendly but they do charge extra for them. They also have gluten free and vegan sweet munchies if you like to pair your coffee with sweets. They have coconut milk and fresh milk — please get the almond) — available .
The rest of these descriptions will get shorter which explains why, BGS is my favorite :D
2. Monsieur Spoon
Definitely the strongest tasting brew of all for a decaf. Believe it or not, I usually mostly crave it after having a night out and had a BIT to drink. My stomach the next morning butt-orders it on GoJek…my full presence not necessary…it might also order one or TWO toasted black sesame bagels with cream cheese along with it. The downside is that Monsieur Spoon Batu Bolong hasn’t had decaf or Black sesame bagels in a couple of weeks now. Monsieur Spoon Pererenan does but you have got to actually manually write what you want on the “notes” section if you are ordering by GoJek because their menu doesn’t show they have decaf or that you get a toasted bagel with cream cheese so, you have got to specify in the notes. You’ll have to pay for the difference in cash if it applies to your order (not for the decaf but for the toasted bagels with cream cheese ;) Their takeaway cups are environmentally friendly. Needless to say that their bakery is one of the best around but I couldn’t give you my opinion as I avoid white sugar, wheat flour and tend to be conscious with these things.
Their coffee serving size is by far the best.
They have the option of fresh milk, soy and almond.
3. Revolver
Grab your jacket and go as this place is enclosed with amazing air con. Sometimes too amazing and you might freeze. A rare find in Bali.
If I was still a smoker, Revolver cafe would have been my favorite. They actually also have a separate enclosed room with aircon for smokers. So if you are a coffee lover who would appreciate some cool air while you sip on your — decaf — coffee and have your cigarette, this place is it. It will smell a bit like the airport smoking lounge but hey, you choose your battles.
If you are a non-smoker, they have an awesome separate enclosed location with a really strong aircon. The decaf here has a strong blend flavor but definitely less than Monsieur Spoon’s. It is still a great coffee. You can order a large one which will cost you less than ordering two. They also have some tables outside and a bench area right near the smoking room for day chilling by the street. You’ll get to see the Berawa shortcut traffic for sightseeing :p If you’re on Tinder, you’ll spot 90 percent of your matches, right here.
4. Wanderlust Café
I was pleasantly surprised to even find decaf let alone a coffee taste and location that I actually really enjoy. The decaf coffee at Wanderlust is definitely recommended. The place in itself is also an awesome location to grab a bite and have a comfortable seat (also, rare in Bali) in an enclosed AC room. They do also have a rather large outdoor space for a Berawa location. You can find the same menu at Wanderlust Fitness Village near Batu Bolong. Definitely more reasonably-priced for “coffee” than BGS, although these are not my words — but just in case this is what you are looking for. I do tend to always feel that my iced coffee finishes in a split second here, maybe because it is that good and that I would also — wishfully love a larger glass ;) or just get two as I mostly do.
Their gluten-free banana pancakes are pretty good and a big sized portion if you want to pair your coffee with a sweet tooth craving (and filling breakfast). I usually ask for the coconut yogurt to be on the side and personally can’t digest granola with too many different foods on the same plate so I opt out. I do like that they are very conscious about their ingredients and the use of sugar.
5. Copenhangen
I do enjoy this place a lot. Although I have only been to their smaller location in Tumbak Bayuh (close to Pererenan). They also have their own-made almond milk which is sweetened with dates. Their coffee is a lighter brew, and very much enjoyable. What I love about Copenhagen Cafe is their desserts selection and the fact that they have gluten free, vegan and non-sugar options like the chia seeds pudding topped with applesauce… it is amazing. They also are known for their cinammon rolls (have vegan ones) and banana bread. This place opens at 6:30 am and very well-priced. It also has a neighborhood feel just without the clicky part :D Very much recommended.
So here they are! Let me know what you think, if you have tried any and if you have recommendations! I will be publishing an entry on all places in Canggu that actually do serve Decaf coffee that I have been to and will keep updating it.
This was written in 2022 but all of these places still exist and my favorite is still BGS. Re-updating soon with videos blogs and reels so be sure to follow us on IG @allthegoodthingsbali
